Belarusian premiere of The House That Jack Built by Lars von Trier will take place on the “Listapad” Film Festival
The House That Jack Built film – its first screening was in Cannes – will be shown on the 25th Minsk International Film Festival in the “Workshop” section, aimed at introducing the latest works of the greatest directors of our time to the Belarusian audience.
The author of Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Antichrist, Nymphomaniac: Volume I and Nymphomaniac: Volume II this time told us a story about a serial killer, which has become yet another sensation of the master of cinema provocation.
The House That Jack Built, where headsmen and victims are on the same level of morality and art is equated to crime, marked director’s return to the red carpet, with the return being accompanied by a daring response to the consumerist society. After the press conference dedicated to Melancholia on the Cannes Festival, Lars von Trier was declared persona non grata due to accusation of sympathy to Nazis. He came back to Cannes with another challenge against the society’s opinion, environment and trends, connected to women’s rights movement in cinematography as well. World premiere of The House That Jack Built showed that Trier remained a rioter and, probably, an only classic in the world cinematography, whose scandalous reputation does not prevent him from being a leader of world cinema establishment.
“The new film by Lars von Trier may as well seem a try to handle his own demons. It has the radical language of cinema, utter ruthlessness, primarily to himself, provocative intimate depiction of people, whose life principles lie “beyond right and wrong”, – says Igor Soukmanov, Program Director of the festival. – This is von Trier’s art – his cinema touches feelings: some admire it, some get appalled. The part of audience, which is quick on crediting the director with cruelty, leaves out of account that the film of the Dane is throughout ironic, and that inhuman thriller that we all are scared of is initially a satire on the topic of the modern world order. The director scans the human nature and a dual nature of art through the art form, which makes him equal to Ingmar Bergman, for example”.
On the Cannes Film Festival, The House That Jack Built was symbolically screened Out of Competition and made colossal fuss among audience and film critics.
