THE DEAD AND THE OTHERS
There are no spirits or snakes tonight and the forest around the village is quiet. 15 year old Ihjãc has nightmares since he lost his father. He is an indigenous Krahô from the north of Brazil. Ihjãc walks into darkness, his sweaty body moves with fright. A distant chant comes through the palm trees. His father’s voice calls him to the waterfall: it´s time to organize the funerary feast so the spirit can depart to the dead´s village. But denying his duty and in order to escape a crucial process of becoming a shaman, Ihjãc runs away to the city. Far from his people and culture, he faces the reality of being an indigenous in contemporary Brazil.
ONE STEP BEHIND THE SERAPHIM
Romania, nowadays. 15-year-old Gabriel wants to become a priest. He is thereby admitted to an Orthodox College. Trying to fit in first but finally realizing the system is totally corrupted and abusive, he is rapidly with 3 other classmates labelled as rebel students by the school board. Caught in the fight for power between an incorruptible but abusive priest and a cunning, crooked and unscrupulous secular teacher, the students learn that lying, stealing, cheating, gambling and betraying are things they have to master in order to urvive in the seminary. What kind of priests will they make after spending several years in this system?
Mother of three, Anna is constantly running around – from work to the nursery, to school, to ballet, to fencing class. As if this wasn’t enough, she suspects that her husband is cheating on her. Her issues are hardly unique, but she has simply no time to stop and think them through. They build up relentlessly, threatening to crush her. Carrying on takes more energy than she has left. Will she be able to save what’s fragile and unique in her life?
Ava’s first visit to the gynaecologist with her mother is a traumatic experience for the 16-year-old young woman. Trauma gives way to anger when Ava discovers her mother’s dishonesty and learn of the rules she broke, when she was the age Ava is now. Bewildered and enraged, Ava attempts and fails suicide at school. To avoid being expelled, she accepts a deal to snitch on her classmates, but a guilty conscience is a heavy burden. Misunderstood by her parents and tormented by school, Ava decides on a third way forward.
HIS LOST NAME
A young man is found almost unconscious on a river bank. A middle-aged widower Tetsuro shelters the man who tells nothing but his name “Shin-ichi.” Though baffled by the old man’s eagerness who treats Shin-ichi like his own son by providing a place to live and a job, Shin-ichi starts to feel at ease and tries to confess his past. In the meantime, there is a rumor about an incident a little while ago in the town, and people begin to suspect the stranger.
THE WIDOWED WITCH
After losing her house and husband, rural woman Wang Erhao leads a stranded life with her ten-year-old brother-in-law in a modified “recreational vehicle”. She drives this vehicle around different villages, and talks about her unknown past to her little brother-in-law along the way. In order to find a warm place to survive the cold winter, she pretends to be a shaman to rid villagers of evil spirits, and ironically, her juggled deceits often become real. However, she soon loses her power to people’s greed and apathy, and in meager attempts of salvation, her life story eventually ends in tragedy and disillusionment.
